Chapter 16

“There’s a little bit more.” Sebastian wiped a damp paper towel along Cassie’s cheek.

Cassie tugged at the t-shirt Sebastian had loaned her and sighed. “I can’t believe I slipped.”

“It’s alright, the discovery was worth it, right?” Sebastian grinned. “At least, Ollie seemed to think so.”

Oliver handed the bagged shovel over to a waiting officer, then turned and walked over to Cassie and Sebastian.

“Alright, we’re going to take a closer look at the shovel and we are analyzing the area where it was found to see if there is any other evidence left behind.” Oliver met Cassie’s eyes. “Are you sure you’re okay? You didn’t hurt anything on your way down?”

“Just my pride.” Cassie winced as she recalled the strange scream of surprise that had flown out of her mouth during her tumble.

“You’re all clean and dry, now. At least your top half is.” Sebastian draped his arm around her shoulders as he eyed her still soaked jeans and shoes. “I think it’s time we take a break from the hiking, though.”

“I’d appreciate it if you stayed out of the woods for now. I’m having the search team expand the grid, and the less people in the woods, the better chance that they will come across something that could be helpful.” Oliver eyed Cassie. “Can you at least comply for an hour?”

“Of course, Ollie. I don’t want to do anything to harm the investigation.” Cassie glanced over at the officers gathered around a table that had been set up at the trailhead. “Anything new, yet?”

“We came across a bag in the woods. It doesn’t seem to belong to anyone. It had some supplies, and a few odds and ends, but nothing that can identify the owner yet.” Oliver glanced in the direction where the bag was found. “It wasn’t near any campgrounds, so it’s possible that it might have belonged to the killer.”

“Was it near where we found the shovel?” Sebastian’s tone brightened. “Maybe there’s a connection.”

“Actually, no. It was found a few miles away from that area of the woods. It may just belong to a vagrant. Hopefully, we will be able to piece something together from it.”

“Detective!” One of the officers farther up the trail waved to him. “How far out did you want the grid to go?”

“I need to take care of this.” Oliver nodded to Cassie and Sebastian, then headed up the trail.

Cassie turned her attention to Sebastian. His eyes locked to hers which made her heart flutter. She started to speak, but her phone beeped with a text before she could. A quick check revealed that the text was from Tessa, and that she had already missed one call from her. Cassie texted back that she would come to her place.

“Tessa must have called me while I was changing.” Cassie put her phone away. “I’m going over to her place to see what she’s discovered.”

“I’ll drop you off.” Sebastian gestured to his pickup truck. “I have a few things to do on the farm.”

Cassie settled in the passenger seat of his truck.
